If cars were like computers…

If cars were like computers

This is a real Golden Oldie, which I got off the Net, but without an attribution. If you know it, could you email it to me for inclusion? Thanks.

At a recent computer exposition, Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated: “If General Motors had kept up with the technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon.”

In response to Bill’s comments, GM issued a press release stating: “If General Motors had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

  1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.
  2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.
  3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For some reason, you would simply accept this.
  4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
  5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive — but would run on only five percent of the roads.
  6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single “General Protection Fault” warning light.
  7. The airbag system would ask “Are you sure?” before deploying.
  8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
  9. Every time GM introduced a new car, car buyers would have to learn to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
  10. You’d have to press the “Start” button to turn the engine off.

Gunny G: Sounds Like Just Another Government Tax To Me….

January 19, 2010

Sounds Like Just Another Government Tax To Me….

Looks like everybody wants to get into the act…the “taxing you” racket, that is!

Now, merchants selling Armed Forces branded merchandise must obtain a license to do so and pay royalties to the military.

Sounds like just another tax to me.

We have already seen now that merchants will just hike up their prices to their customers/consumers to recover the additional cost of doing business.

Where will it end? Or will it end?

Reminds me of the tax collector in the old Popeye comic strip who roved around town imposing an impromptu tax on whomever, whatever people were doing at the time.

ARE YOU HAPPY YET WITH YOUR 1.6-GALLON “KLINTON TOILET”?

January 7, 2010

ARE YOU HAPPY YET WITH YOUR 1.6-GALLON “KLINTON TOILET”?

Tired of flushing multiple times? Tired of cleaning up needless messes?

Why don’t the damn things just work as they should?

Well, you may have guessed it already–it’s just one more case of Big Brother sticking its nose in your business!

Here’s a great article that will explain the history and result of what happened.

The Relentless Misery of 1.6 Gallons

by Jeffrey A. Tucker

Recently by Jeffrey A. Tucker: If You Believe in IP, How Do You Teach Others?

My order at my favorite Chinese takeout was taking too long. I stopped into the men’s room. There I witnessed a common scene: the modern toilet disaster. An otherwise clean business had a restroom calamity on its hands, one so grim that I hesitate to describe it.

The conjectural history is not difficult to reconstruct. The toilet apparently had trouble flushing. There was a plunger by the toilet, of course, as we see everywhere today. The toilet was plunged to get rid of the obstruction, while the obstruction itself spilled all over the floor and stuck to the plunger too.

The customer probably left the ghastly scene in a rush. Management knew nothing. But now customers were coming and going into this bathroom, surely losing all inspiration to eat or order food.

It would be easy to blame the restaurant owners. What is with these people and why can’t they at least have a clean restroom? But reacting this way would be unjust. The hidden hand behind this unsanitary calamity is the US government. The true origin of the mess was not in the hour before I arrived but back in 1994, when Congress passed the Energy Policy and Conservation Act.

This act, passed during an environmentalist hysteria, mandated that all toilets sold in the United States use no more than 1.6 gallons of water per flush. This was a devastating setback in the progress of civilization. The conventional toilet in the US ranges from 3.5 gallons to 5 gallons. The new law was enforced with fines and imprisonment.

For years, there was a vibrant black market for Canadian toilet tanks and a profitable smuggling operation in effect. This seems either to have subsided or to have gone so far underground that it doesn’t make the news. I’ve searched the web in vain for evidence of any 3.5 or 5.0 gallon toilet tanks for sale through normal channels. I wonder what one of these fetches in the black market. This possible source has no prices and an uncertain locale.

DOES THE POST OFFICE HAVE YOU COMING AND GOING, TOO?

January 2, 2010

DOES THE POST OFFICE HAVE YOU COMING AND GOING, TOO?

I dunno bout you all, but I hate to go to the PO!

But, it looks like they have it set up so that, in effect, we will have to do just that!

Look at it this way…let’s say that a stamp/postage for a regular first class letter to Aunt Tizzie in New York is XX cents. And the cost for each additional ounce, or thickness, or oversize dimensions are XXA cents. How do we ourselves stick on the just right amount of postage?

Trouble is, that for those overweight/oversize letters (maybe overweight or oversize) we aren’t quite sure if they are ok as is, or if we need to take them to the PO. Unless of course we’ve taken the trouble to gather the necesarry charts, scale, and gizmos that you can slip the letter through to see if it’s ok or not.

When in doubt, I used to just stick an extra stamp on the damn thing and let it go with paying more than needed, in most cases. THEY KNOW THIS, RIGHT!?

Maybe that’s why prices keep rising; and why their requirements keep getting more complicated. They never come out on the short end–we do!

They always come out good on whatever happens here, not us. And still they cannot make a go of it. Always crying “poor-mouth,” always in the hole, needing big brother guvmint to bail them out.

Yet, they love to boast that they do not operate on taxes that we–the people–pay. They claim they are like any other business operating on their own (in this case, non-existent) profits. But yet they still have the (guvmint) monopoly on first class mail, I think, maybe? Why the monopoly?

Again, sounds like they got us coming and going.

Now just who really needs those money orders they sell–you can buy them in any convenience store, probably. This isn’t a hundred years ago on the American fromtier, we should be able to choose these services, unlimited, from a variety of non-guvmint sources.

And the unwanted resident/occupant spam that they stuff in our mailboxes! Why? You cannot refuse to accept just the occupant/resident junk w/o refusing ALL your mail!

Kinda got ya comingand going, huh?

And the lines at the post office to get the correct amount of postage on each letter, else they might be reurned to you–in a few (or more) days.

Got ya coming and going, huh?

Maybe if they made it so folks could just put the right amount of postage on their mailings. Maybe then those lines at the PO wouldn’t be such a problem. Maybe that would lower employee salaries and operating costs.

Why Do We Suckers Tip?

Why Do We Suckers Tip?
Gunny G’s Globe and Anchor Sites & Forums! ^ | 27 September 2003 | Dick Gaines

Posted on Sunday, September 28, 2003 7:51:27 AM by gunnyg

Tip means To Insure Promptness, or Tips, To Insure Promt Service… Numerous writings regarding the history of “tipping” would indicate that tipping came about centuries ago, and was paid up front to insure prompt service subsequent to you providing a gratuity. Now, the gratuity is paid after the fact; just another aspect of how backasswards things have become.

Gone are the olden days when the innkeeper’s daughter was the servant administering to weary travelers at wayside inns. But today, tipping has grown into an institution unto itself, and we are “conditioned” to this with obedience, and without question, no resistence, not so much as a whimper.

In fact, we Tip with extreme loyalty and pride, as we do paying our “taxes”! Anyone who dares voice an opinion contrary to tipping, is immediately attacked by tippers–the majority–therefore, mob rule prevails. Recently, I chanced to post some of my thoughts on the above to a Internet bulletin board, and was lambasted unmercifully as a tightwad, flake, and just plain mean-spirited (where have I heard that b4?).

Some of these irate responses came from enraged waiters, waitresses, etc. (excuse me, “SERVERS”) who felt that they were entitled to tips, since their employers paid them below minimum wage and they needed the tips. I’m not sure that is even so and/or legal.

Others stated that they certainly would not take another job at higher pay and have to pay taxes on that pay, ending up w/less in their pockets; whereas otherwise they did not report their total tips, etc. Hmmm…

This topic is not limited to servers, etc. Today, everybody under the sun seems to be an eligible tippee and expects a tip–and big ones too.

If you are inclined to respond/post on this board, please attempt to do so with the big picture in mind, and not personally biased, e,g., as you would if you just happen to be one of the countless tipped/insufficiently tipped servers, taxi-drivers, bellhops, etc., etc. You may respond/post on any or all of those things mentioned above, and/or related information, questions, answers, etc.

Actually, I may have been motivated on this topic after reading an article on the Internet (by a U.S. Marine, moonlighting) who was badmouthing consumers in general for thinking that they should pay only the traditional 15% tip–this arrogant xxxxxxx was sure he had more coming him, and, indeed, was irritated/enraged that some were daring enough, depriving him of his due.

What’s This **** About Fast Food Eat-In and Take-OutTax/Charges?

December 29, 2009

I have been noticing lately that my receipts at fast food restaurants now contain charges for both “eating in” and “taking out” food orders. Got ya both ways, huh!

Dunno if all the fast food joints are doing this or not–the one I’m thinking of starts with an “m” (also, an upside-down V)…

What is this another gubmint/corporate shakedown/sin tax/sin food bs; perhaps like the hidden sin-tax on coke, cigarettes, etc., etc.???

Maybe they’re just so dumb/slick that they think we don’t even notice it. Perhaps not; maybe they’re now so arrogant they know we cannot do anything about it!

Just my observation–what do you all think about this, folks?

Membership Only Stores: Shopping Cart Searches

Membership Only Stores: Shopping Cart Searches

Membership Only Stores: Shopping Cart Searches!

So what do you think about those membership stores–you know the ones where you pay an annual  fee for membership and you get to buy there at much lower prices from a large selection of merchandise.

I have been a member of several of them the last few years, and, generally, it is a great thing.

One well known store in particular (probably the largest of all) is not located in my home town and so I drive to one  many miles from here every month or so to stock up on needed items–they have everything from A–Z– food, furniture, automotive, etc. And the savings are great; and I spend several hundred dollars there per trip. The employees are all very helpful and courteous all the time.

Just one thing really bothers me to the point that I no longer shop there as often lately, and I may just stop altogether soon.

Once through the line at the cashier, you push your shopping carts directly to the exit where an employee is stationed to search your cart–merchandise that is already yours, bought and paid for, btw.

COSTCO (Brandon, Fla) …A CHANGE IN SHOPPING CART INSPECTION POLICY???

COSTCO  (Brandon, Fla) …A CHANGE IN SHOPPING CART INSPECTION POLICY???
*****

We went to the CostCo store in Brandon, Fla yesterday and was surprised to observe that there had apparently been a distinct change in their policy with the checker at the exit.

They, the checkers, were no longer pawing through your already paid for merchandise, your property, in your shopping cart(s), but merely stopping you and quickly and politely marking your receipt with a magic marker.

I was in the store over an hour and observed the checker lines several times while I was there; it appeared to me that it was not just a case of hurrying up due to a crowd–it was not very busy.

A WARNING TO ALL AMERICANS

By TERRI CARRIO on September 02nd, 2009

This had better scare us to our knees!!

From Naval Aviator, Commander Jerry Wilson

We lived in California during the winters of 2007 and 2008. We became addicted to Fox News and watched OReilly and Hannity and Colmes every night. When we got back home, we upgraded our cable to get Fox. I watched the Presidential campaign very closely. Initially because I thought the Democrats would nominate Hillary Clinton and then in astonishment when they chose an even more hard-left candidate. All of last year I told everyone I could that Obama was not a
Democrat, he was a Marxist. He is far to the left of any European leader and even our far left party, the NDP.

I read Saul Alinsky when I was in University. I studied him and his writing carefully. When Bill Ayers and his idiot wife were bombing and killing people at random in the Weather Underground. Weather Underground and the Black Panthers were closely allied. I read David Horowitzs account of changing from a Marxist to a conservative after seeing that the government was afraid to prosecute members of the Panthers for murdering his personal assistant. He suddenly understood the evil that Marxism really was.

After the student radicals failed in creating a Marxist revolution in the United States by violent means, they embraced Alinsky. You would be wise to read Rules for Radicals because it outlines how Hillary and Obama planned to get into power, and what they intended to do when they got it.

Socialism is not the correct descriptor for what Obama and the Democrats are doing. They are going to be much more far reaching than anything Sweden has ever been able to do. Obama is following Alinskys plans, those set out in Rules for Radicals and his other writing. The Democrats are attempting to create one party rule in the U.S. and in achieving that, will create crisis after crisis by their own actions and use those crisis to nationalize the means of production in the U.S. You are in the middle of a communist revolution and few in the U.S. can actually see it for what it truly is.

The U.S. . is now on the path of financial destruction. The Constitution has been shredded and individual human rights are being trampled. In less than 8 months. Obama has used a recession to take over the two largest industries in the U.S. He will debase the Dollar and is on the road to creating an incredible energy shortage that will allow him and Congress to take over the energy industry.

But by and large I think that by the 2010 elections, the Democrats will have gerrymandered electoral districts to the point that it will be impossible for them to lose control of both houses of Congress. The incredible increase in the money supply is going to create Zimbabwe and Venezuela style inflation, and with it, controls on the currency and the amount of money that can be taken out of the country.

I love America , I cannot believe how the ignorance of the American public has created a situation whereby they are going to lose their Republic and slip into an age of repression and tyranny.

I may be nuts, but so far I have been 100% in my predictions of what Obama was going to do, because I merely had to look at Rules for Radicals to see what was coming next.

I read Glenn Becks book, Common Sense and in it re-read Thomas Paines pamphlet with the same name. I recommend the book.

When the storm finally hits (and it will), those of you who supported the Obama administration will be affected as well. It wont just be us gun owners or Flat-Taxers, or Pro-Lifers that get hit. Youll be right there next to us.

You all thought the Conservatives were nut cases. You know, all of us who believe in God, small government, the Second
Amendment, etc. You thought you could just go back to sleep after the election was over. In your world, America will continue as before. Youll still have the same rights, the same nice house, the same big screen television. After all, your high school football team won and the other team lost go team! Even if you have bothered to look up from the daily grind since Nov 4th, you dismissed everything that has occurred as politics as usualthe same old stuff.

In the end, itll all be OK wont it? Not this time.

There are a growing number of citizens in the US that are ready to fight to shut down the governments grab of personal
freedom, its blatant abuse of the constitution, and its attempt to replace the American way of life with socialism. You have to listen carefully to hear them, but they are there. I wont start that fight, but when it goes down I will join it.

As for you, why, youll be shocked because you didnt see it coming. And eventually youll be saddened when you see that we have truly lost the way of life with which you grew up. Youll be saddened that your children and grandchildren live in a socialist, government-controlled gulag where their every movement from cradle to grave is tracked by the government. But most of all, youll be saddened by the death of friends and relatives who are brave enough to fight and die for something they believe in.

You know, McCain wasnt much of a candidate. Ill give you that. He was the lesser of two evils for most of us. I dont blame you for not voting for him since, at the time, you didnt know what we all know now. But at least John McCain was an American. He was a supporter of the American way of life and he understood that you cant negotiate with terrorists. He understood and appreciated the sacrifice made by my father and other members of the Greatest Generation.

Mark my words friends. All across America groups are forming. They are forming out of anger and out of desperation at the thought of losing America . Theyre not militia groups, terrorists as the Department of Homeland security would have you believe; they are Americans, loyal to the constitution. They are mothers and fathers and grandparents. They belong to groups like the Minutemen Civil Defense Corps, the Peaceful Resistance, the Constitution Party, the Young Conservatives, the 9/12 Project, and Grassfire. Right now they are fragmented, each focused on their own cause. But sometime in the
next two years, our government is going to do something really stupid and these groups will come together. Watch for it, wait for itget ready. It will happen.

When that event happens, whatever it is, our great country is going to plunge into chaos for a while. I pray to God that we make it through that time and emerge a stronger, smarter country.

American Rhetoric: Movie Speech from Network – Howard Beale is Mad as Hell….

I don’t have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It’s a depression. Everybody’s out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel’s worth; banks are going bust; shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter; punks are running wild in the street, and there’s nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there’s no end to it.

We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat. And we sit watching our TVs while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that’s the way it’s supposed to be!

We all know things are bad — worse than bad — they’re crazy.

Open Letter To Glenn Beck By Alex Jones 150909top3

Alex Jones has addressed Glenn Beck in the form of an open letter, appealing to him to “be on the right side of history” by using his growing public platform to tell the truth rather than exploiting it to deceive grass-roots conservatives and libertarians into following a re-birth of the neo-con agenda that Beck has embraced all along.

——————————————

Glenn Beck,

It is important to preface this letter by highlighting the fact that I do not attack people lightly and have defended you in the past when Van Jones was calling for you to be fired. I fully support your right to free speech.

On September 12, 2009, Americans descended on Washington, DC., in one of the largest displays of citizen disgust towards government in the history of this republic. While this patriotic day of fed up Americans was happening, the usurper (Obama/Soetoro) made sure he was out of town. As usual. Obama aka Soetoro has taken a real fondness to flying around on Air Force One with his inventory of teleprompters and stable of fawning sycophants.

Let’s back up one day to September 11, 2009. The flim flam man was at the Pentagon with his militant, Marxist wife and bag lady of fashion, Michelle. The annual ceremony for those murdered on 9/11. At the same time in a court room in Georgia, Obama’s lackeys were playing more games in an important case. Americans keeping up on current events know there have been dozens of lawsuits challenging the citizenship eligibility of this guy in the White House who has used five different names (Barack Hussein Obama, aka Barry Soetoro, aka Barry Obama, aka Barack Dunham, aka Barry Dunham) and concealed every single record of his life except what he wants you to see.

What does Nancy know about Obama’s eligibility ?

Democratic officials are staying mum on some online images of Democratic National Convention Chair Nancy Pelosi’s “Official Certification of Nomination” naming Barack Obama, of “5046 South Greenwood Avenue” in Chicago and Joe Biden, of “1209 Barley Mill Road” in Wilmington, Del., as the party’s candidates for president and vice president in 2008.

The differences between the two documents that have been posted on bloggers, as well as linked in a report by the Canada Free Press, are revealing.

One references Pelosi’s verification of Obama’s eligibility to serve as president “under the provisions of the United States Constitution,” while the other drops the reference to the constitutional requirements.

American Roulette in assassin nation (Guess who he’s talking about?) ~ Jaime O’Neill

American Roulette in assassin nation (Guess who he’s talking about?)

It’s been a long time since we Americans have gunned down one of our leaders, but we seem to be gearing up to do it again.

Nearly three decades have passed since President Ronald Reagan and his press secretary were shot in the nation’s capital following a speaking engagement there. A few years earlier, President Gerald Ford survived two near-miss assassination attempts. Thirteen years before the Reagan shooting, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King were assassinated in the course of a very troubled few months in 1968.

That was, of course, just five years after we lost a young president who had inspired both hope and fear in a population that always gets anxious when change is afoot. We shot a few other leaders in that decade, too, all across the political spectrum – Medgar Evers, George Wallace, Malcolm X, George Lincoln Rockwell.

When we get anxious, it gets dangerous, and we’re nearly always anxious. But we get particularly anxious when race is brought into play, and when change is in the air. We’re armed to the teeth, and guns sales have skyrocketed since President Obama took office.

Of Me I Sing ~ David Kahane

Of Me I Sing
National Review ^ | September 11, 2009, 0:00 p.m. | David Kahane

Posted on Saturday, September 12, 2009 9:50:12 AM by fiodora

His Serene Highness, the Emperor Hussein, has a song in his heart.

I woke up this morning with a song on my lips. Well, not exactly a song — more like a tune, a song without words. I’m sure you know it. It goes something like this: ha-huh-ha-huh-ha-huh-ha-HUH . . . ha-huh-ha-huh-ha-huh-ha-huh . . . ha-huh-ha-huh-ha-huh-ha-HUH . . . ha-huh-ha-huh-ha-huh-ha-huh . . . I’m referring, of course, to the music of His Serene Highness, the Emperor Barack Hussein Obama II, who after a brief two-week absence from the national scene that more or less coincided with the beginning of Ramadan brought his road-show version of Chicago to a joint session of Congress Wednesday night. They say you can go to the well once too often, but as far as BO2 is concerned, you can never go too often to the well of the Senate or the House.

I can never get enough of the Punahou Kid. That saturnine visage, occasionally punctuated by the faux Bobby Bonilla smile; the Islamic finger-wagging, as if he had studied oratory at a mosque in Indonesia or something, the muezzin singsong of the cadences, not quite white and not quite authentically black, either. I love the way he imperiously summons the feckless Senate eunuchs and the cannon-fodder congressmen to his mock-SOTU performances. I love seeing Michelle, scowling and glowering from her perch like Madame Defarge at the guillotine, clicking her knitting needles as she waits for the next head to fall into the basket. I love seeing Annunciata d’Alesandro Pelosi — that’s Maerose Prizzi to you — as the Lady in Red, her face frozen, the only sign of life the blinking of her adoring eyes. I love seeing John McCain and his fetching companion, Lindsey Graham, smiling like a couple of rubes at a three-card-monte game, so pleased are they to be patted on the head like the good little losers they are. And I love the way that, afterward, the press corps, conducted by Jake Lingle, immediately dances around like puppets on a string, mouthing the words to “The Press Conference Rag” as Rahm Emanuel delicately pirouettes in the background with a red Spanish rose between his teeth and a dagger behind his back.

And most of all, I love that, after nine months in office, the emperor has to pretend no longer about what his real goals are for this downright mean, rotten country of ours. And that, better yet, his patience is wearing thin with the enforced charade of “centrism” and “patriotism.” What I saw Wednesday night is what I’ve seen in our boy Barry from the beginning: fundamental change, even if we have to ram it down your throat. Which is what, in case you haven’t noticed, we’re doing.

‘I’m as Mad as Hell, and I’m Not Gonna Take This Anymore!’ This sentiment is being voiced by protesters turning out for Tea Parties and Health Care Town Hall Meetings around the country. People are angry and frightened by the prospect of government running their health care system, but their anger goes far beyond a 1000 page health bill.

Health care reform is merely the spark that has touched off a prairie fire of grassroots rebellion among a people who believe their representatives do not represent them, do not listen to them and do not care what they think. The spark that has triggered rebellion

By Ellen Sauerbrey

‘I’m as Mad as Hell, and I’m Not Gonna Take This Anymore!’  This sentiment is being voiced by protesters turning out for Tea Parties and Health Care Town Hall Meetings around the country.  People are angry and frightened by the prospect of government running their health care system, but their anger goes far beyond a 1000 page health bill.

Health care reform is merely the spark that has touched off a prairie fire of grassroots rebellion among a people who believe their representatives do not represent them, do not listen to them and do not care what they think.  Many Americans feel that they are losing control of their financial well being, their values and their culture. Shell shock set in as they tried to absorb the rapidity of drastic change.
The first stirring of protest came with the Tea Parties in the spring.  These gatherings were completely misread by a media that ignored them and dismissed the attendees as right wing kooks.  The Tea Parties were about taxes, yes.  But far more they were about the rapid intrusion of the federal government into private affairs, about deficit spending, and a growing understanding that America was heading down a very dangerous road.
People see a government in Washington that is in the process of destroying the constitutional principles of limited government and maximum personal freedom that made America the freest and most prosperous country the world has ever known.
