Better Wages at Gas Stations Than Some Police Deptartments

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – It’s hard to find good police officers, retired county police chief Tim Fitch says. In some cases, they could make more money behind the counter at a gas station.

“There are several police departments in the area today that you would make less money being a police officer in mostly dangerous areas, crime ridden areas, than you would working the counter at QuikTrip.” Fitch says.

Hillsdale police officers in north county make 11 an hour, no benefits. The minimum wage proposal in the city is $15 an hour.

Fitch thinks the North County Police Cooperative is a good step, small departments pooling money and raising standards, but he says changes must be made for it to work.

“Well if you take a bunch of dysfunctional agencies and put them together with no real leadership I don’t believe there will be much change,” Fitch says. “But that…
